Art Group Day 4

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” - Pablo Picasso

We talked very briefly about Picasso and looked at some of his cubist portraits.  I encouraged the kids to try different colors for their skin and eyes and hair.  We traced their bodies on a roll of construction paper and gave them tempera paints.

I think the kids were distracted because we were in such a fun backyard and they were more interested in playing with each other than in painting.  Maybe the project was too big for one morning as well.  Red Fish and New Fish are still working on theirs.   But most importantly the kids had a good time, got a little painting in and learned that it's okay to work and think BIG.  I wanted them to know that Picasso was an artist at a young age and they can be artists as well.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a famous Spanish painter and sculptor.  He was an artist from a very young age; his mother said his first word was “pencil.”  His father was an artist and began Picasso's training at an early age.  He began drawing classes at age 7, and was in advanced art classes by age 13.  He dropped out of art school at 16 and began selling his work in Paris at age 19.  He is well known for founding the cubist movement.

Back for some catch up. Your art days look like so much fun! Is this just a neighborhood thing or could we come too?

I missed Picasso week?! Dang! Give me a couple more weeks and I swear we'll be there. Just don't do Jackson Pollock day without us!
